A number of Taiwan-based network-equipment makers other than Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) and Asustek Computer still managed to record an annual revenue growth of over 50% in 2006 despite the dominance of Foxconn and Asustek over the broadband CPE (customer premise equipment) market, according to market sources.
Taiwan makers as a whole accounted for at least 80% of the global shipments of broadband CPE products, including xDSL and cable network devices, with Foxconn and Asustek combined taking up about 70-80% of Taiwan's total shipments, the sources indicated.
While Foxconn and Asustek are taking up the bulk of global orders for ADSL CPE products and cable modems from the leading telecom carriers, other Taiwan makers, including Alpha Networks, Sercomm, Arcadyan Technology and Billion Electric, are receiving orders from other services providers, particularly the CLECs (competitive local exchange carriers) in Europe, the sources stated.
Additionally, various types of value-added services launched by telecom carriers around the globe also helped drive up growth of the global broadband CPE market, said the sources.
According to data made available from market research firms, the global broadband CPE market grew 15% on year to reach US$5.6 billion in 2006, with VoIP CPE products growing 115%, and ADSL IADs (integrated access devices) and cable EMTAs (embedded media terminal adapters) each going up more than 100%, the sources noted.
