No major revenue growth for Taiwan network-equipment makers in 2006, say sources

Based on current market conditions and the number of clients, Taiwan-based network-equipment makers are unlikely to see a major increase in revenue in 2006, although some of them have seen their revenues continue to grow quarter-on-quarter this year, according to sources at the makers.

With the exception of D-Link, which has a number of affiliate companies and collectively generates revenues of over NT$30 billion (US$912 million), others, including Accton Technology, GemTek Technology, Zyxel Communications and CyberTAN Technology, will continue to see their revenues hover between NT$10 and NT$20 billion in 2006, as they had done for the past two years, the sources stated.

The NT$20 billion mark eventually serves as a "glass ceiling" that is difficult for local makers to break through, the sources lamented. In addition, there would probably be no new entrants, in 2006, to the club of companies with revenues of over NT$10 billion a year, the sources said.

Although local makers have begun doing business with a number of new clients, including Philips Electronics, Siemens, Juniper, Ericsson and some big consumer electronics companies in Japan, revenues contributed from deals with these new clients will not be significant until mid-2007, the sources indicated.

Among the first-tier makers, Alpha Networks, an affiliate of D-Link, could be an exception and is expected to lead its domestic peers to revenues exceeding the NT$20 billion-mark for the first time in 2006, after seeing its consolidated revenues grow 28.4% to NT$9.85 billion in the first six months of this year, said the sources.

Cameo Communications, which acquired Global Sun Technology, and pushed its combined revenues to over NT$10 billion in 2005, may be unable to sustain revenues of higher than NT$10 billion in 2006 after its revenues declined 11.7% on-year to NT$4.48 billion in the first half, the sources noted.

SerComm managed to post a 40.5% on-year growth, for revenues of NT$3.63 billion in the first half of this year, and the company is widely believed to have the potential to join the NT$10 billion club soon. However, it remains to be seen if the company could push its revenues to over NT$10 billion in 2006, contended the sources.
